COVAP

Our history

The history of COVAP starts in 1959. A group of farmers decided to buy raw materials to feed and raise their livestock. Without them knowing it, the impetus of this group of men and women influenced by their land and supported by their families was the first step in creating a revolutionary project.

The farming cooperative

Our history is marked by all those who, from the very beginning until today, have made it possible. As our first chairman said:

"We live in an area that is not rich in land or water, but which has an incredible human resource that has brought economic and social development to this region."

Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno

Founding Chairman of COVAP

Height may be the key to a happy marriage

Researchers have found what they think is a key to a happy marriage. The secret ingredient for marital bliss could be a difference in height between the two partners. South Korea's professor Kitae Sohn said the taller a woman's husband is, the happier she is. Mr Sohn said: "A greater height difference in a couple was positively related to the wife's happiness." However, he said the attraction of a tall husband did not last forever and diminishes over time. He said he was surprised that it took around 18 years of marriage for this appeal to disappear.

Professor Sohn was intrigued as to why women preferred taller men. He said: "Although it has been known that women prefer tall men in mating for evolutionary reasons, no study has investigated whether a taller husband makes his wife happier." He analysed data from 7,850 Indonesian women. They did not know why they preferred a taller mate. Sohn wrote: "Women simply like tall men….This is similar to people favoring fatty, salty and sugary foods without knowing exactly why." However, the BBC noted that shorter men can be more stable, better husbands. (Breaking News English)

1968: Martin Luther King shot dead

The American black civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King, has been assassinated.
Dr King was shot dead in the southern US city of Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a march of sanitation workers protesting against low wages and poor working conditionsHe was shot in the neck as he stood on a hotel balcony and died in hospital soon afterwards.Reverend Jesse Jackson was on the balcony with Dr King when the single shot rang out."He had just bent over. I reckon if he had been standing up he would not have been hit in the face," said Mr Jackson.Police in Memphis were put on alert for a "well-dressed" white man who is said to have dropped an automatic rifle after the shooting and escaped in a blue car. There were early signs of rioting in Memphis after Dr King's death and 4,000 members of the National Guard were drafted into the city.
A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been ordered to ward off disturbances. The US President, Lyndon Johnson, has postponed a trip to Hawaii for peace talks on Vietnam. The president said he was "shocked and saddened" by the civil rights leader's death."I ask every citizen to reject the blind violence that has taken Dr King who lived by non-violence," Mr Johnson said.
Dr King, 39, had previously survived several attempts on his life including the bombing of his home in 1956.
The charismatic civil rights leader joined the crusade for equal rights for black people in America in the mid 1950s.He first came to national prominence as one of the leaders of the Alabama bus boycott in 1955. In 1963 Dr King led a massive march on Washington DC where he delivered his now famous "I have a dream" speech. Dr King advocated the use of non-violent tactics such as sit-ins and protest marches. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel peace prize. (BBC ON THIS DAY)
